myindo.com myindo.com goes hunting for ayam penyet in singapore!

by Farah 'Fairy' Mahdzan (21 Oct 2005)

It was a Sunday afternoon and Orchard Road was swarming with people - among them, sizeable crowds of Filipina maids, happily socializing on their day off from work. As I ambled along in multicultural Singapore that fine September day, a signage at Lucky Plaza made me stop dead in my tracks.

Firstly, it was the TEH BOTOL advertisement that caught my thirsty eyes. Secondly it was the intriguing menu that was being boldy publicized - AYAM PENYET.

The English translation provided on the Indonesian sign was "Smashed Fried Chicken."

(I don't know about you, but I always thought penyet was spelled "penyek." Maybe it's different the way Malaysians say it ('penyek') as opposed to how Indonesians say it - 'penyet'. Food for thought!)

The SPCA would hate me for this, but of course my mind started to conjure comical images of poor chickens being flattened to death with a steamroller in the slaughterhouse, all ready to be served up as ayam penyet.

Nonetheless my curiousity got the better of my imagination. So off I galloped into Lucky Plaza to check out what this ayam penyet business was about.

And apparently this was it.

A recipe straight from Surabaya, ayam penyet is fried chicken condimented with some killer sambal and kangkung plus cabbage (for the 'cooling' factor), all quaintly served in a clay bowl.

And yes it did look like the chicken had taken a bit of beating.

Naturally, we had our chicken with white rice.

The ayam penyet is nice and savory and makes for quite a bit of a meal. The sambal was hot and made us perspire like athletes. Eating sambal is a sport on its own anyway.

I had also ordered a side of bakso meatballs, which I could barely finish. Fried chicken, bakso meatballs and just plain greed will do that to you.

Our good friend Tante Safe of Singapore bought us lunch. Thanks Tante. :)

Would I eat ayam penyet again? Absolutely.

Tell Ayam Penyet Myindo.com sent ya.

To wash our meal down, we had our mugs of teh botol. At 1.80 Singapore dollars a pop, it is the priciest Sosro drink that I've ever had if you compare the conversion factor of the rupiah (close to Rp.10,000). A bottle of teh botol in Indonesia is typically around Rp.2,000 - Rp.3,000.

And really, no true teh botol-er would drink their teh with ice. Come on, it's even documented:

"Devotees say that for the best experience you should sip Teh Botol Sosro with a straw, straight from a bottle that has been fridge-cooled: Don't pour it into a cup and put ice cubes in it."

- Evi Mariani, Local preference for tea puts Coca-Cola in cold sweat, The Jakarta Post, (3 Sept. 2005).

So much for being a teh botol devotee at Ayam Penyet! The teh botol was actually from the Tetrapacks. The inclusion of ice gives the illusion of a full mug.

Oh, and remember my little imagination of chickens being splatted for the purpose of being served as ayam penyet? Here's a little animation to put that thought to virtual reality.

Disclaimer: No chickens were harmed in the making of the following presentation. The same cannot be said for the fates of the chickens featured above.

Oh come on, I sensed you pressing the "penyet again" button over and over again. You're just a sadistic chicken squasher, aren't you?

yes i do!!! addicted to it..
i think in Malaysia, the best i've ever tasted is Wong Solo's Ayam Penyet (situated in Ampang, beside the Galaxy Ampang Mall)

it's better than Ayam Penyet Restaurant's ayam penyet. seriously.

Wong Solo's sambal is superb!!!

Hey ASHA, thanks for the head's up. Kapan2lah kalau aku ke Surabaya. I'm sure they've got awesome penyetans there.

Ox lung penyet? Woah. Sounds intense! I'm not a fan of jeroan and babat, but I can definitely handle lele penyet. What's a bandeng?

#48 asha 26-Jan-2008, 13:08 MYT

AREED: Oh yeah, I did hear about that ayam penyet place in Sunway. No teh botol or alpukat jus you say? How can! That's like going to eat roti canai at a mamak and they don't have teh tarik!

#43 areed - Website   11-Sep-2007, 10:16 MYT
i just try this ayam penyet at sunway last weekend. taste good but I found it quite expensive for just an ordinary friend chicken. plus, they're no tehbotol or alpukat jus there.

#42 Adrian 5-Aug-2007, 02:26 MYT
compare to Teh Botol in US.. they charge $2 sumthing... so, that's the priciest i guess. haha

Kalau ayam mati kena lenyek tayar lori 10 tan masa melintas jalan di panggil apa ya???

#20 Awang 26-Oct-2005, 09:16 MYT
Penyet or Penyek whatsoever-lah.. they mean the same kok, artinya Dihimpit or ditekan or ditumbuk or “pressed by something hard but not necessarily big malah usually sesuatu yang kecil je”. Indonesians love sambal right? And we make sambal in a plate from batu kali, batu gunung or tanahliat called “Cobek”, in Sumatera they call “Batu Lada”, we put cabai (chili), onion, lil salt, tomatoes into cobek and we tumbuk’em all with another batu kali called “ulekan”. After the sambel is ready, put ayam goreng ke, tempe goreng ke, tahu goreng ke, ikan lele ke…ape je yang kita minat ke cobek..then here it is… we press it hard with that ulekan, so the dish is mixed with sambal. Weih…makan with lalapan (fresh vegetables, like timun, kacang-panjang, labu kecil) and nasi putih panas…Hmm pasti nasi sebakul juga abis…Coba aja kalo berani… So..next time u go to Jakarta Farah..try also Tempe penyet…or Lele goreng penyet…and also try the Pasundan restaurant (Sundanese/West Javanese style)…the sambal+lalapan really rule!!

#19 jai 26-Oct-2005, 00:12 MYT
i fell in love with the Ayam penyet the 1st time i tried it. And now i regularly visits them at least once a month. Their soto's a killer too. And it must compliment with Tehbotol of course.. Just a thought, many famous faces have dine there.. Ari Wibowo, Dewa to name a few.

CECILIA: Yes it would have been MUCH cheaper to use the Sosro tea bags. Entah kenapa Ayam Penyet didn't think about that - it'd have been easier to import in! No need to worry about heavy Tetrapack boxes.

But let's let their business manager worry about that.

#10 cecilia 24-Oct-2005, 18:53 MYT
Hi Farah,
just want to add something,
If i'm not mistaken, Sosro is also selling their tea bags which makes it really cheap as compared to the one in botol. Of course, you have to serve it in your own glass and with ice cubes.

So that Ayam Penyet Ria is making more profit

#9 Fitra - Website   24-Oct-2005, 15:38 MYT
