Jalan Petaling: Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown
by Farah 'Fairy' Mahdzan (12-Dec-2004) | Readers Say

It was on a hot, sweltering and mercilessly humid Sunday afternoon that my two girl friends and I went to Jalan Petaling to satisfy our craving for cheap designer handbags and imitation watches. Well, actually the girls did all the shopping, I was more interested in observing the atmosphere and went shutter-mad all the way. Here are twelve (count 'em) random shots from our rare little trip to Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown.

Photos by: Fairy Mahdzan

Are we there yet?

Along the sidewalks, a cement wall cries "Legalize Ganja (marijuana)".

A big selamat datang to Jalan Petaling.

Fake designer watches, anyone?

Zana wanted to browse through a selection of shades, only to then
be distracted by a vibrant display of handbags at a neighboring stall. Women.

A drink seller with overzealous Malaysian patriotism.

The inevitable presence of beggars permeates even Kuala Lumpur.

Petronas Twin Towers bottle cap openers in the foreground;
Zana and Jida practicing the power of haggling in the background.

Zana picked a really swell KL souvenir: a battery-operated glass ornament
that lights up in various shades of fluoroscent light. Very neat.

An ais krim man! Bless him.

Jida drooling over a very cute beaded hand bag.
"Kasi murah sikit lah, boss..!"

Hi, Jida! Salamat Pagee. I found this page while looking for your name on the 'Net. I was concerned about you and your family following the tsunami. Magdalene is worried. Please update your aging masseur and fellow Brough House occupant.

Hi, Fai
I was thinking very hard to remember the brand of your quite new camera was it Nikon or Canon - ho..ho..ho... Finally I knew it that it's a Canon one.
My old email address is no longer valid, Dear - I just gave you the new one.
Feel like asking a birthday present of a new Camera (masih lama banget birthdaynya tapi udah pingin sekarang hadiahnya).......... . .
My warmest regards to Jida ya.

Canon Rebel!!!! No wonder your pics came out so vivid in colour but the style... have to pass the credit to the owner of the Rebel... your photography sense is unique. Love your angle and pics stories. Surely know how to capture the 'moment'. With Canon Rebel, sky is the limit to your pics. Can't wait to see more.

Rina has already making plans to go to Jakarta again. This time, I don't want to be left behind. Planning to go there somewhere in april or may. This place seems to be contageous ek? U can't help but feel that you want to come again... must be the BAKSO..

FASHAH: Thanks for the compliments. For the pictures featured on this page, I used my digital SLR Canon EOS 300D, also known as the Digital Rebel with the standard 18-55mm lens. The Digital Rebel's an awesome camera, I love it. For the camera's specs, you can visit this Link

Hi fairy, was wondering what type of digicam that u used here. U took some nice pics. Good angle and like the composition.. not to mentioned the vibrant colors. Jangan kembang plak...

But that's my sincere comment. Still wondering what type of digicam u r using.

JIDA: I think making that illegal u-turn would have been sillier. I certainly don't want to fork out duit tak pasal2 just becoz we were impatient! But really lah, terrible betul the traffic that day. But hey I had lots of fun babe. Great company and big laughs, as usual.

#4 Jida Mohamed 15-Dec-2004, 14:39 MYT
hehe! It was fun babe, but by the end of it, I was just as exhausted as you were...especially after that 1.5 hr traffic jam on jln tun razak. i should have kicked myself for not making that illegal u-turn towards jln raja chulan from jln pudu. BODOH BODOH BODOH!

Anyhow, it was easy to shop at PS coz things were damn cheap la. Where else can I get a Gucci for RM40??? YES I INSIST IT IS A GUCCI GUCCI GOOO!

Heh, I was grinning in the picture with the beaded handbag coz I was eavesdropping on the exchange between the stall owner and the bunch of japanese tourists that were bargaining......the stall owner was speaking in japanese and the japs were speaking in malay. HEH! Bangau betul.

Anyhow babe, thanks for being so patient with us chicks. Thank god we dont do this everyday.....
