How to Make Marshmallow Rice Krispies Treats!
by fairy (3-Dec-2003) | Readers Say

I bought a bag of marshmallows one day and knew that they were doomed to a task I'd been itching to undertake for years: make marshmallow Rice Krispies treats! Incredibly easy to make, this super gooey tidbit is a no-brainer decision for those last minute potluck parties where you just couldn't be bothered to cook anything elaborate. Come readers, let's see how I pulled off this instant junkfood stunt!

Armed with my marshmallows, a print-out recipe from Cooks.com, a box of Kellog's Rice Krispies cereal, butter and vanilla essence, I was all set.

The Philippines-imported marshmallows I purchased are halal since the gelatin is made of beef and not from pork like these cute Halloween Marshmallow Peeps my friend Jon Loeb brought me from the USA. (Sadly I had to give the Peeps away to my non-Muslim friends, but darn it, were they ever cute!)

According to the online recipe you'd need 4 cups of mini marshmallows but I decided to use the whole bag whose volume totaled to about 5 cups.

Oh what the heck, screw the measurements; I decided to use the entire small box of Rice Krispies cereal too.

I started melting about 1/4 cup of butter in my trusty glass saucepan. If you're doing this, remember to use low heat to avoid burning your butter.

After the butter has completely melted, I started adding in the marshmallows into the simmering oil.

Here's the beautiful part about making these treats: watching the cute marshmallows melt into an irresistable goo! It looks like gooey puffs of clouds forming on my kitchen stove! Sweet!
A dash of vanilla essence is then added to my gooey mix for that sophisticated vanilla taste. I mixed well.

I had to act quickly before my marshmallow porridge congeals! I transfered the mix into a mixing bowl and swiftly added in the rice cereal.

Before the mix hardens, I stirred my cereal and marshmallows together like there was no tomorrow. It gets tougher once the marshmallow-butter hodgepodge starts cooling off so quickly does it!

I then emptied the sticky mix into a large flat Pyrex bowl, which I first greased with some butter, and flattened it against the insides of my glassware.

To fill in the gooey gaps, I added more cereal on the surface of my slowly but surely hardening treats.

After letting the rice krispies dessert cool (I'd say about 10-15 minutes - put it under a fan if you really can't wait!), I sliced it up into squares with a serrated knife.

Hmm... lovely things they are, all gooey, chewy, sweet and crunchy! Bananas in Pyjamas think so too.

My nephew had a different idea about eating the marshmallow rice krispies treats and devoured the sticky square things like anyone would any regular cereal: with milk! I prefer to eat the treats as is, but what a creative little guy. :)

#36. Mhhmmm. I was planning on making these tonight. Yummy! Thanks for the pictures - but *butter*? o.0 California born and bred, with Asian minimalist tendencies, and I o.0 at your decadence! But MHMMM, butterrrr.... Have you tried these treats with a bit of chocolate melted over the top? Homemade stuff tastes better cause you can adjust for sweetness.

Ataupun tanda Halal from the Islamic Council/Authority from the country of origin ... sebagai satu contoh ... TruBlue Garlic Butter contohnya (tanda Halal dari Australian Islamic council). Adakah anda percaya pihak pengimpot marshmallow tersebu yang memang semahunya meyakinkan orang Melayu/Islam yang marshmallownya halal? Saya pernah bertanyakan mengenai gelatine (wanted to buy some for my baking) dari peniaga yang megatakan gelatin yang dijualnya Halal siap ada certificate. Saya menegaskan saya ingin melihat sendiri certificate tersebut. What was stated in the cert was that the gealtine isn't made from any pig/pork. Is that halal enough? Certainly NOT. Halal is more than just No Pork. It is sad that people care less about things they consume these days tapi ikutkan nafsu saja. I hope this is taken in a very positive context. Malaysia has an islamic Authority which guarantess us the Halalness of a product. If true indeed Halal, the manufacturere should get the genuine Jakim Halal certificate. Thank You.

#29. Thanks for the recipe and the cute picture of the little guy. The step, by step photos really helped a lot. When I made mine, placed waxed paper in the dish before squashing the mixture in. They came out really easy with less scrubbing up. Also, thanks for the note regarding the gelatin. I have been trying to let some Hindu friends who eat marshmallows know about this but they did not believe it. Now they are convinced, thanks to you. By the way, the chocolate Rice Krispies work too.

#25. You're right DD, Kellogs do sell the marshmallow rice krispies treats in ready made form, in shiny blue packets. I used to buy tons of them while I was a uni student in the US, couldn't get enough of it. Much prefered the original one compared to the chocolate one (too sweet).

I haven't found them yet in Malaysia, hence why I decided to share this recipe.

#8. Wah, sepertinya enak tuh buat breakfast…cuma marshmallownya bener2 halal gak, Fai? Kalau emang halal, gue pesan satu dong Fai. Maksudnya satu truck...

#6. Suria, apanya sangat, all you need to do is melt some butter and marshmallow over the stove, the rest of the steps just constitutes adding and stirring the cereal into the caramelized mix! Easy as pie, this recipe will turn any dapur-illiterate person into a pro chef instantly!
Posted by Fairy on 5-Dec-2003, 11:59 MYT

#5. Definitely a must try!! My kids will love 'em. Tapi bila ye? Not really a dapur-type.. IF (capital IF ni..) I really get to make this, I shall eat it like your nephew did!!
Posted by Suria on 5-Dec-2003, 09:00 MYT

#4. Iya Adhe, gelatin selalunya tidak halal alias made from babi. Dari kecil I had learn to avoid marshmallows because of this fact, but now dah ada marshmallow halal, so happy lah.
Posted by Fairy on 5-Dec-2003, 08:27 MYT

#3. At first.. I thought that you'd just combine marshmallow with that cereals.. I never knew marshmallow can turn out like dat.. You've just gave me an idea.. caramel corn flakes How sticky it would be huehehehe

Btw, baru tau aku kalo marshmallow ada yg tidak halal
