A Fishy Cereal Experience
by Farah 'Fairy' Mahdzan (10-Jul-2003) | Readers Say

I could live solely on cereal if the human body wasn't so dependent on real food like vegetables, fruits and meat to help it grow, build antibodies and conduct necessary bodily functions like that. As a child, cereal was often a part of a fast and hassle-free breakfast or a quick snack for me, but now as an adult I barely have enough morning time to have breakfast before going to work. Forget weekend mornings, I can no longer wake up early enough to even see the sun set. So eating cereal as dessert at 10PM right after a hearty dinner is no strange habit in my neck of the woods at this age.

One night after developing a sudden craving for Koko Krunch, I bought this small box from a first (and last!) visit to a supermarket I had never been to before. The cereal came with a water squirter toy in the shape of Disney's Nemo the clown fish! Now granted, ever since the movie came out, finding a Nemo toy still in tact within the cereal box was like finding a rare chest of treasure at the bottom of the ocean. Everytime I looked for a free Nemo toy in a cereal box, it was either always sold out or some kid had stolen the toy by ripping through the plastic shield and leaving the tampered cereal box behind. Idiots.

But I'm happy now, I got my Nemo, even if the supermarket from which I bought the cereal did smell like it hadn't been disinfected or cleaned since 1972. It was horrible just walking through the diary aisle, God knows what dead animal was rotting there. No wonder there were still boxes and boxes of Koko Krunch with Nemo. No one dared venture into the shop for fear of smelling themselves to death.

But as I bravely walked through the foul-smelling supermarket, I risked the cashier into thinking that I was going to rob the place because I had a handkerchief over my nose and mouth. But then again you've seen those people walking around with SARS masks, so a handkerchief is hardly anything to snicker or get alarmed about. In fact the supermarket people should have felt thankful that I didn't just start throwing up on their checkout counter.

So ok, one normally eats cereal with milk, so here's my bottle fresh milk from Dutch Lady. Now I'm one of those people who could drink milk if bits of chocolate cereal were swimming in it but ironically I could never drink white milk on its own. I'd always end up gagging.

But you know what, tonight I wasn't in for white milk with my cereal. I had a better idea:

Let's have Koko Krunch with strawberry milk instead! Now I had never had strawberry milk with any cereal before and at this point, my curiousity was literally eating my soul. What would chocolate cereal and strawberry milk taste like? A diabetic's nightmare of a breakfast? Or a delightful combination of strawberry and chocolate just like I had envisioned?

But first we must choose our cereal bowl! It is essential to a unique cereal eating experience! Which shall it be, smiling bimbo Barbie or cuckoo Koko bear? As the cartoons smirked back at me from their plastic surfaces, my heart without a doubt was swooned over by the pink Barbie bowl. Darling, there is always time for a sense of color matching, even during breakfast or a late night cereal binge. Clearly my cereal feast was destined to have a date with Barbie the doll in the pink bowl. It matches the pink milk, damn it.

Here we go, pouring strawberry milk into the chocolate cereal. Hear it snap, crackle and pop? Well ok, maybe not. Wrong cereal.

Oooo would you look that. It looks so... unnatural! As unnatural as eating rice with cold curry! Chocolate cereal in pink strawberry flavored milk? It is absurd! But I have to admit, the cereal looks pretty in pink milk. In a matching pink bowl! (Have I said that already?)

Ok now for the big test: the first bite.

*Crunch crunch chew chew... Eyebrows frowning... Swirls cereal concoction in mouth*

Big pink milky smile appears.

Heyyyyyy... It's not bad! Not bad at all! I loved the taste! It wasn't as sweet as I had expected, and the combination of the Koko Krunch chocolate cereal bits and strawberry milk was at the same time sinful and heavenly!

But as I was greedily scooping spoonfuls of half-soggy half-crunchy chocolate cereal into my mouth...

Nemo! Get out of my cereal, young man! Poor fish. He must have been gasping for air. I mean, water. Pink milk. Something wet. Sorry kid, you won't find your daddy clown fish in here.

Now if you put chocolate cereal in white milk, it turns the white milk into chocolate milk. But what happens if you add chocolate cereal to pink milk? The color that results is none that is within my vocabulary of color names. Phocolate? Chink maybe?

After two bowls, I was done. Golly, I had never enjoyed cereal as much as I did tonight. Ok, where's my Nemo? Nemo???

*Burp!* Uh-oh...

#14. Hey Adhe, haha jadi mupeng? Ah dasar! You Nemo fan too? I loved that movie man.

I do keep an archive of my stories, masih ada tu di STORY ARCHIVE link. Lihat aja.

The photos taken for this story was taken with my Olympus digicam, but my Mr. Potato Head pictures were taken with my Zire 71.

I just decided to expand my writings over other themes, junk food is perfect because it's literally universal. Tapi masih cinta Indonesia kok.

#3. Well tasia, I've had at least a 15-year headstart in living and breathing from your younger siblings, so I sure hope my brain has managed to sharpen its potential creativity skills over the years!

I give credit to my 4-year-old niece for the cute bowls. I found them while rummaging through the cabinet for a boring regular pyrex bowl; imagine the howls of delight.

Raf, I thought you lived in Tampoi, no?
